The Locket

Seated on the edge of his unmade bed, Tony was a 30-year-old man who stood at 6 feet tall and weighed around 185 pounds, his build a mix of strength and a hint of softness from years spent behind a desk. His tousled chestnut hair fell just above his hazel eyes, which flickered with a blend of anxiety and determination as he scanned the cluttered room that had become a refuge for his dormant ambitions. A scruffy beard framed his square jaw, giving him a rugged demeanor, while the faded blue T-shirt he wore clung to his shoulders, hinting at countless hours spent in front of a screen.

Sunlight streamed through the half-drawn curtains, illuminating the scattered sketches and crumpled notes that littered the floor; today, however, was different. The air felt thicker with purpose, and as he took a deep breath, his heartbeat steadied. With a newfound resolve, he pushed himself off the bed, the weight of indecision lifting, knowing it was finally time to put his long-held plan into action.

Tony stood in front of his closet, carefully considering his options. His Sunday best had to be just right, especially for church, where everyone always seemed to notice the little details. He flipped through his dresses, pausing on a soft yellow one and then a lavender one with delicate flowers. They were pretty, but not quite what he wanted for today.

Finally, his eyes landed on a pink dress that was just perfect—bright, cheerful, and with just the right amount of twirl in its skirt. He pulled it out and laid it across his bed, picturing himself in it. To match, he selected his favorite white cardigan, soft and cozy, with little pearl buttons that gave it a fancy look. He stepped into his pink shoes with pretty laces, and gave himself an approving nod.

Next, he went over to the mirror and brushed his hair until it shone. He chose a pink bow, tying it just above his ponytail to add a touch of charm.

The final touch was his magic silver locket, a small, beautiful pendant that his grandmother had given him. He fastened it around her neck, feeling the cool metal rest gently against his collarbone. It was his special piece of jewelry. As long as he wore it, everyone would see him as he wanted to be seen.

One moment, everyone would see a young woman wearing the pink dress and cardigan. Soon, they would see a 10-year-old girl wearing the same outfit, although the outfit would fit the new illusion as well as the old. The next they would see a matronly woman. Perhaps, a baby next. Then an elderly woman in the same dress. Tony wondered how the church goers would react to his many changing forms.

Tony took one last look at himself in the mirror, his reflection smiling back at him, an adult man wearing a pink sundress. He felt ready for the day—polished, put-together, and just a little bit proud.
